Catfish Report-January 25 1999 The catfishing remains very poor all over the lake. I talked to Bob Higgins of Limit Out Bait and Tackle in Clear Lake Oaks. He had two customers on Saturday that planned to fish exclusivly for catfish all weekend and would report back if they did any good. Bob received no report from them. A good friend of mine went out on his new boat with two other anglers and drifted all the hotspots in the Nice/Lucerne area for several hours and had nothing to show for their effort. I'm not really worried about all this negative catfish news. December and January are traditionally slow months for catfishing at Clear Lake. During heavy rain years a few channels and a lot of brown bullheads are taken anywhere that runoff water is entering the lake. We have had very little rain and therefore very little runoff. I feel confident that the fishing will improve noticably in the very near future....Good Luck...Catfish Ed. Catfish Report-January 15 1999 The catfishing is still a mystery. The mystery is two fold, where are the catfish and where are the catfishermen? I have contacted all my sources and no one has heard of anybody trying for cats. In the January 11 report, I promised that I would give it a try this week but I wimped out because of the cold. I have a little spark of hope that the predicted warm rain will put the catfish on the bite, of course then we have to get some catfishermen to wet a line.....Good Luck.....Catfish Ed. Catfish Report-January 6 1999 Al Frietas of Don's Bait and Tackle in Clearlake rates the catfishing as very poor. It's not so much that the fish aren't biting, there just aren't enough catmen that are willing to brave the elements. Al reports a few large channel cats ( 13 to 20 pounds ) being taken around Redbud Park area with jumbo minnows. I have not seen anyone catfishing around my area ( Nice/Lucerne ) in the last week. I should go out myself and see if I can locate some fish but I have to find the time.
