Lake Mead Fish-In Results
or:
Carp on Steroids!!

Unfortunately there were only 6 participants in the fish-in but we all managed to have a nice time. The weather was very uncooperative with winds gusting at well over 50 mph and morning lows in the low to mid 30's. We did a little prefishing on Friday evening but only managed a few half hearted nibbles. The areas where the match fishermen had been groundbaiting for 5 days was so windy that it was unfishable so we had to fish in a more sheltered area near there. Due to the nasty weather we didn't start fishing on Saturday till around 10:00am. Our host, Frank Walters put in a considerable amount of groundbait and it started paying off around noon.

I was fortunate to be the first one to hook up as I got a nice take on my rig baited with Pescaviva scopex flavored corn and set the hook into a drag screeching carp. I told Frank that it had to be at least 8 or 10 pounds the way it was fighting but he just smiled as I brought a 3 pounder to the net. I have caught many carp from ½ pound to well over 20 pounds in my lifetime but have never experienced a fight like that from a 3 pound carp or even a 5 pounder which is why I came up with the title "Carp on Steroids".

My first Lake Mead carp!

A little while later one of Mary's rods baited with an anise flavored doughball started jumping as another "carp on steroids" headed for the middle of the lake. After an amazingly fierce battle she brought a beautiful 6 pound golden warrior to the net.

Mary's first Lake Mead carp, a feisty 6 pounder.

Our host, Frank Walters was the next angler to hook into a fish. Since he was our host he didn't want to catch a bigger fish than his guests so he settled for this scrappy 5 pounder that fell for Pescaviva scopex flavored corn.

Frank's son, Robert hooked the next fish, a beautiful 4 pounder that really gave a great account of itself with the ultra-lite gear that Robert was using. Unfortunately I forgot to take a photo, sorry about that Robert.

Our host, Frank Walters with a 5 pounder.

The highlight of the day was when Frank's grandson Ryan hooked up with a battling 4 pound 12 ounce carp that really put a smile on his face. Ryan handled the fish like a seasoned pro.

During the fish-in I caught this striper that weighed about 4 pounds with an anise flavored doughball. Although he put up a respectable fight, my 3 and 4 pound carp were much scrappier fish by far.

Frank's grandson Ryan with his ultra-lite rod bent over with a battling 4 lb. 12 oz'er.

Ryan's 4 lb. 12 oz'er.

A striped bass of about 4 pounds that grabbed my anise flavored doughball.

Even though the weather was so bad and the fishing was slow, we all had a very nice time thanks to Frank's efforts. I'm sure that if the weather had cooperated the fish would have done so as well. Mary and I definitely intend to return to Lake Mead sometime in the near future to experience some more of those "Carp on Steroids".
