OCTOBER 1999 BASS REPORTS |
|
|
Bass Report/October 29 1999 All the bait and tackle shops are reporting very good bass fishing. We had a weather front come through Wednesday evening that dumped close to an inch of rain and it seems to have improved the fishing. Al Freitas of Don's Bait and Tackle in Clearlake (707-995-9668) reports most anglers are catching limits of 2 1/2 to 3 pound bass using plastics and crankbaits. They are catching most of their fish on offshore weedbeds. Percy Oved of Limit Out Bait and Tackle in Clearlake Oaks (707-998-1006) says that most of the regulars are doing real well. One fisherman caught and released 17 bass from 2 to 3 1/2 pounds throwing Dead Ringer worms and Brush Hogs around small isolated weed mats. Another good choice is throwing blades and cranks around docks and rocks for bass to 5 pounds. Bob Simmons of Lakeport Tackle (707-263-8862) reports good fishing in the north end of the lake also. One angler caught and released 12 bass in the 2 to 3 pound class yesterday morning using buzzbaits and blades around the Rocky Point area. Bob adds that shad colored tube baits are producing a lot of fish also.
Bass Report/October 22 1999 Fishing is still pretty good considering all the tournaments we have had this month. Dorothy of Limit Out Tackle in Clearlake Oaks (707-998-1006) says they are catching a lot of small fish but it's tough to catch a big one. She suggests fishing the remaining weed mats with frogs or buzz baits, especially in the morning. Try to find a small isolated mat as these seem to hold a lot of fish. They are still catching a few good fish on the rockpiles with plastics and jigs but you really have to work for them. Bob Simmons of Lakeport Tackle (707-263-8862) says he has been doing well with silver grubs and green Zoom grubs in the 4 inch size. He's catching most of his fish by skipping the grubs under low floating docks. Bob adds that the frog bite in the north end has slowed down considerably.
Bass Report/October 15 1999 The bass fishing is still decent even though we had over 280 bass boats fishing on the lake last weekend. Bob Simmons of Lakeport Tackle (707-263-8862) reports a lot of fish being taken on plastic frogs in the north end of the lake around the remaining weed mats. As the weed mats dissappear, it's easier to locate fish in the remaining ones. Bob says fishermen are throwing large Brush Hogs and 7 inch worms to fish that blow up on the frogs but miss the hook. He adds that flipping Brush Hogs around and under docks is producing good results also. Al Freitas of Don's Bait and Tackle in Clearlake (707-995-9668) says red plastic frogs are doing well on weed mats and 7 inch grape neon worms are the way to go around docks and rockpiles. Bob Higgins of Limit Out Bait and Tackle in Clearlake Oaks (707-998-1006) says they're catching a lot of bass around docks in the Oaks and Glenhaven area with large and extra large minnows. He also suggests throwing Brush Hogs and Kalin grubs around docks for bass up to 5 pounds.
Bass Report/October 8 1999 It's hard to get bass reports since most of the bassers on the lake are prefishing for this weekend's 100% Bass Tournament. When the pros are in a tournament, they will not divulge any secrets for obvious reasons. The best report is from Kim Freitas of Don's Bait and Tackle in Clearlake (707-995-9668). Kim went out a couple of days ago and really nailed them around Rattlesnake Island with black/grape 6 inch Zipper Shakin Worms. Kim adds that they are hitting Baby Brush Hogs, especially the cotton candy color and any lure in the baby bass color. For the live bait fishermen, there are a lot of bass being caught on extra large and jumbo minnows. Kim suggests the mouth of Cache Creek as another productive spot. Finally she adds that breaks, rockpiles and points are the most productive structure in the south end of the lake. Percy Oved of Limit Out Bait and Tackle in Clearlake Oaks (707-998-1006) confirms the hot bite on anything in the baby bass color. He adds that baby bass crankbaits are working well as are white on white spinnerbaits but the topwater frog bite has all but died completely. Bob Simmons of Lakeport Tackle (707-263-8862) reports good results in the north end of the lake with baby bass crankbaits and white on white spinner baits. There are still a few fish falling for curly tail grubs skipped under floating docks and of course a plastic worm is always a good choice. Bass Report/October 1 1999 Bass fishing has slowed down somewhat except in the Clearlake Oaks arm of the lake. Percy Oved of Limit Out Tackle in Clearlake Oaks (707-998-1006) reports an excellent buzzbait bite in the early mornings and lots of action during the day with Brush Hogs and plastic worms and grubs around submerged rocks and deep water docks. Al Freitas of Don's Bait and Tackle in Clearlake (707-995-9668) says the fishing is a little on the slow side. Part of the problem is that it's difficult to get any info because most of the fishermen are prefishing for this weekend's tournament.
Bob Simmons of Lakeport Tackle (707-263-8862) says the fishing is a
little tough but some anglers are having fair success in the early
mornings and late evenings throwing Weed Wogs and plastic frogs in
the weed mats. There is still decent action skipping curly-tail grubs
and tube baits under floating docks in the afternoons.
